July 2023
Monkey Wars is the second game that I made in May 2023. It is a shoot-em-up game based on a monkey protecting the forest from humans.
Theme
At the beginning, I knew that I wouldn't want to make a space and alien theme kind of game. I wanted it to be different than typical types of themes. I suddenly thought of the idea of a monkey who would protect his home from gorillas. However, I thought it'd be weird for them to be fighting for territories. I, instead thought something that we can relate to. Humans who kill animals and destroy their habitat. Hence, the objective of the game is for the player, Monkey, to protect his habitat against the humans who want to destroy it for their own wants.
Process Thinking
In my game, the player is a monkey who shoots bananas as its bullets. At first the bananas did not spin or rotate. To make it more attractive and realistic, I made it rotate as the bananas were shot.
In this project, we needed to implement two powerups for the player. Now since the monkey shoots bananas, I figured it would need more bananas to help it shoot more. So I change the powerup appearance into a bunch of bananas.
One of the powerups, I had wanted to do was for the player to be able to shoot a straight line of bananas continuously but with my scarce knowledge of programming I resorted to speeding up the rate of fire for the bananas. I have to admit it was also due to the lack of time management on my side.
I decided to use a funny meme song from TikTok as the background music. I didn't want the games to be too serious and stiff as the theme was a bit pitiful, that the monkey had to protect its Motherland. A monkey is known to be mischievous and cheeky so I decided to put a song that would fit their image.
Conclusion
Overall, I think given the fact that I had to create my own assets as well as add in more functions into the game, I did well in the situation at that time. I am proud with my work but I hope to improve my skills in the future.
