Projects List
These are the projects our Crew is working on.
Current Projects:
Earth Day Awareness
For the last two years the Conservation Crew has raised awareness for Earth Day at the high school by selling different items and promoting environmental protection.
Tower Gardens
The Sustainable Systems class has installed Tower Gardens in the lunch room in order to grow vegetables in an efficient manner year round. The aquaponic systems that use less space, less water and less soil. Recently, the class received a grant to purchase and install more tower gardens!
Trash to Art
After pairing with the Art Club, the Sustainable Systems Class is working to collect bottle caps and make them into an art installation for viewing!
Micro-greens
Since January 2020, individuals in the Sustainability class grew micro-greens. It is a project to sustainably grow micro-greens to be used in the high school. The project also shows the ease of growing these greens at home.
Recycling
Aluminum and Plastic
The Conservation Crew founded the aluminum recycling program at the school two years ago. In 2019 the Crew was able to add plastic recycling throughout the school.
School-wide composting
In February 2020 composting became available for the whole school! Working in conjunction with Dirt Rich, we were able to compost our food scraps and paper products. However, composting has since been discontinued due to the pandemic.
Clean the falls
April 17th, 2021 was the Clean the Falls event. The Sustainable Systems class teamed up with the Gateway to Glacier to clean any debris or trash off the new bike path that was created last winter that runs by the Big Sky Water slides. We weren't able to clean the entire section, so hopefully, we can go back and finish our trash cleaning work soon!
Aquaponic fish
Welcome to the newest guests in the Sustainable Systems classroom! These fish (who have yet to be named officially) live in an aquaponics tank. This means that the waste the fish produce is pumped out and used as fertilizer for the plants that are growing on top of the tank. To return the favor, the plants purify the water for the fish, forming a symbiotic relationship.
Clothing swap
In December 2019, the Sustainable Systems class hosted the first clothing swap at Columbia Falls High School. The crew has continued the clothing swap every year since. This clothing swap was made possible from the contributions of all students at the high school.
Watershed AWARENESS
To end quarter one, Sustainable Systems designed an informational display about the Flathead Wathershed
Digital Handbook
After working with the school's administration, the student handbook and registration were entirely digitalized! This helps save an incredible amount of paper that most of the times would have quickly ended up in the trash.
