Week One Introduction
This week is our first get together.
We will spend some time with introductions,
go through the course description and some "how to" use the website.
We will ask you to share what your personal concepts of preaching are.
The concept of "kerygma" will be introduced. This will lay a foundation for your considerations and growth around preaching as we move through the course.
TO DO Before Week One
1.Spend some time thinking about how you will briefly introduce your self, and what your concepts of preaching look like.
If you want to watch a short version of the study: This is the basic Word study video.
The introduction to the entire Key word series is here.
Week One Summary Notes
On our first week we just began to get to know each other. You would have observed in our very short time of sharing that our new community is made of people with a wide variety of life experiences, backgrounds, perspectives, geographies and so on.
You would also be aware of similarities in our lives, and understandings. Think of your own gleanings from talking and listening together. Do you think we all have the same understandings and perspectives about our group? Not yet! (One of our students has yet to introduce himself, and he is on the way home from Africa)
We have to gather more, listen more, share more and learn more. With deeper understandings and shared living a community is able to nurture and support one another in authentic ways. That is a model for our lives in the world and community, and one I would like for you to think about in relation to Proclamation (Kerygma)
In the midst of every community, there will be individuals called who are sensitine to this things, and gifted in them. They may even be called out of the midst of the world's market place to teach, and preach. Next week, we will move into discussions of what a call to preaching might look like and what is required for an individual to do so.
Week Two
Life in the Community,Life Of the Community and the Life of Study of a Preacher
TO DO Before Week Two
Engage this Word Study on "Agora" The Market Place
Read through the Sermon Evaluation Form document. This is the form we will be using a little later on in our course, however for now, pay attention to the summaries before each section, and you will be prepared for our lecture and discussion for week two.
The Sermon Evaluation Form is hereReview a method of Ignatian Prayer.
I know some of you may be somewhat familiar with Lectio Divina. I have discovered that many individuals and groups (well intended and blessed by what they do) do not follow the full intent or method. Take some time if you are able this week to review this document and or powerpoint. It is an introduction (or re introduction for some of you) to an adaptation of Ignatian prayer That I use three times a day. As well, I have provided a link here to The Disciples Prayer Book, which is a gift to us from the Indigenous Church. It is widely used as Lectio Divina throughout the Anglican Church of Canada.

Finally something To think about:
John's Gospel speaks about the "Word Made Flesh" in the very first chapter. A Literal translation of that would be something like this: God, in the person of Jesus, pitched a tent in the middle of the town Marketplace, and spoke the language of the people."
AFTER session two is done, I will be asking you to reflect on this,by responding to a few simple questions.
WEEK TWO ASSIGNMENT
The lecture for week two invites you to engage a broader perspective of what preaching is, and to ask yourself if your definition of homiletics is growing in understanding.
Read through the notes you have made during the lecture, or look at the document here, and answer these questions. When you have, please email me your reply.

Questions:
What is your understanding of proclamation (kerygma)? Ie..is it JUST about preparing an address for Sunday Service? What is the bigger picture...What does a life of study mean for a preacher?
What are the Marks of an Authentic preacher?
Do you have any Questions so far for Bishop John?
Week Three Preparation
This week we will be begin with an Ignatian Prayer exercise. My hope is that this exercise will help you experience ways of connecting scripture to your life and environment by discipline, breathing, imagination and prayer.
The lecture will be talking about Genre.
This is from the instructors notes to get you started:
A genre is a type of artistic, musical, or literary presentation that has a particular style, form, or content, that helps you identify it. Identifying Genre can tell you much about how to understand the purpose of the presentation. Eg: art, music, or writing. here are more examples for you to think about:
Literature contains Genres like fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama. Thats not all!
Within Genres, there are "subgenres" such as cook books, news reports, history, science fiction, romance, mystery, biography and autobiography just to name a few!.
In Music: Genres include Newfoundland Music, irish music rock, pop, jazz, classical, etc.
These are subgenres like country rock, blues, rock, alternative pop, swing, jazz, hymns, chamber music etc.
How about Movies? Genres like mystery, romace, comedy, drama, horror, action, documentary etc.
Lots of Subgenres there!
Knowing a Genre helps people understand what kind of story, song, or film they are going to experience, and gives them an idea of the setting and intent of what is being offered. (The Linguistic intent)
Week Four Preparation
Review your notes from last week as a foundation for this lecture:

Your Reflection Question /Assignment for this session:
Preparation for Week 5
Think about this:
When you identify and pay attention to the Genre, how would (should) that impact on what you hear, and how you would prepare and share the message?
