Practicum V Reflection
Conclusions: My practicum V rotation at the Dover High School Wellness Center has been the most impactful experience of my FNP training. Working in an adolescent-focused primary care setting allowed me to strengthen my pediatric clinical skills while increasing my awareness of the unique needs and challenges of the adolescent population. This rotation expanded my ability to provide developmentally appropriate, cultrually sensitive, trauma-informed care to students navigating a sometimes chaotic physical, emotional, and social transition to adulthood.
Throughout this experience, I gained valuable insight to adolescent gender health, particularly including acute illness, musculoskeletal complaints, sexual health concerns and diseases, mental health and identity crises, and preventative screenings and sports physicals. I have become confident in my abilities to address sensitive health concerns professionalism and compassion. I've found that I have a natural ability to connect with this age group to provide the best care as possible. I enjoyed being able to provide anticipatory guidance, health education, and early intervention screenings to promote long-term wellness to students that are medically underserved.
Completing my final practicum within this community was very rewarding and has reaffirmed my commitment to providing evidence-based and patient-centered primary care. The relationships that I've built with not only students but staff and other ancillary healthcare members have solidified my belief that I am fully capable to provide exceptional primary care to all ages across the lifespan. How fitting that this final rotation came at the end of my program. I feel that this opportunity truly tested my resolve and showcased my skills of being an empathetic and socially adept clinician.
Recommendations: As I have now completed all my formal practicum training, my personal recommendation is to be wise when accepting a position as an FNP. I thrive in an environment where my growth is supported and I have the opportunity to be challenged to expand my skills. Therefore, I am looking for mentorship opportunities and careers where I can transition into leadership to make a profound impact as an advanced practice clinician.
