HOURS: Following morning conference (8.30 am) until 5 pm. Faculty covers the service over lunchtime and during noon conferences. It is helpful to sign out any late day exams that you have protocolled or know will be diagnostically challenging to the evening fellow covering 5-8 pm or the evening faculty.
SITE: Ultrasound Reading Room
PROTOCOLING: Protocols are determined by the study ordered. Protocols are published on the ultrasound webpage for reference. Additional images should be limited to addressing urgent findings.
WHAT STUDIES DO I READ: Fellows should interpret and dictate all the exams that the technologists call them to review. If the fellow is not clear about the diagnosis or findings on exam, please call your faculty before releasing the patient. Technologists may ask you to go into the exam room, to scan a challenging patient or to see findings “live” while they scan, if there is some question about what they are seeing.
Outpatient ultrasound studies should be screened by Fetal Faculty, Liberty faculty, or finally the Trunk faculty before calling the base ultrasound reading room.
Normal or “stable” outpatient exams are put on the general reading list for anyone to read.
The University of Cincinnati NICU sends us head ultrasounds and occasional other scans to read. The images look different than our scans performed here at CCHMC. Do your best to sort out the images and ask your faculty for help as needed. (We do not employ the UC sonographers, so we have little control over the images sent to us.)
We do NOT routinely read other outside exams – check with your faculty if asked to read an outside case.
CONTRAST ORDERS: Contrast enhanced Ultrasound orders are generally handled by faculty.
ADDITIONAL: If you are not physically located in the Ultrasound Reading Room at the base, please call the QC desk at x37115 to let them know how to reach you.
