Emergency MR, IR, and Nuclear Medicine Studies
- Clinicians seeking to obtain emergency interventional, MR, or nuclear medicine exams outside of normally staffed hours on these services are expected to call 636-6286, as directed by Who’s On Call.
- When receiving such a request, the stat box radiologist should take down the following key information on the study:
- Patient name and MRN
- Exam desired and reason for exam
- Contact information for requesting physician (pager, mobile phone, etc)
- For nuclear medicine exams, the stat box faculty radiologist will determine if appropriate, perhaps in consultation with the requesting physician and a NM radiologist.
- For IR exams, the stat box radiologist should contact the IR attending on-call (as listed in Qgenda) with this information. The IR attending will make a final determination as to whether the exam is appropriately performed as an emergency and will contact the IR technologist on-call to set up the procedure.
- For neuro MR exams (Brain, head & neck, spine) the stat box radiologist should contact the neuroradiology staff on-call (as listed in Qgenda) with this information, and they will make a final determination as to whether the exam is appropriately performed as an emergency. They may ask that the stat box fellow contact the MR technologist on-call or may elect to contact them directly.
- For other MR exams (Trunk and MSK), the stat box fellow and attending will determine whether the exam is appropriately performed as an emergency, and the appropriate protocol. They may seek input by telephone from faculty with expertise in the area of interest.
- Requested cardiac MR exams go through the faculty in cardiology. It would be very unusual that the study would be done out of hours. It may be converted to a cardiac CT study that again will go through cardiology who will contact one of the radiology cardiac imagers to discuss.
