International Elective opportunities - Aug 26, 2023

Dr. Miguel Arango has collected information on some of the international elective opportunities available for our residents. See below!

I have been on 2 missions now with CAMTA, a group from Alberta that travel to Quito. They run 2 ORs during their two-week mission, with an option for people to go 1 week or the other or both. I have become involved with them because of their provision of Pediatric orthopaedic surgery in one of the ORs. We do approximately 50 hip joints over the two weeks in the adult OR and another 25-40 Pediatric orthopaedic surgery procedures of varying types, most commonly club feet and dysplastic hips. The trip usually takes place the last week of February and the first week of March. Costs are all fundraised but the individual and are in the tune of $3500 give or take, but this pays for flights, accommodation (shared 2 bed hotel rooms) and almost all meals. They have brought medical students and residents from Alberta in the past. Malcolm Howard went with me this past year and found it to be a great learning experience.

This is the information for OP Walk Canada Which I'm the Cordinator

We have two missions—one in April in Cuenca, Ecuador and one in November in Antigua, Guatemala.

The mission in Ecuador is mainly dedicated to provide surgical treatment for high-rise hip dislocation. We run two OR and provide care to about 30 patients.

The mission in Guatemala is mainly hip and knee arthroplasties, with about 90% primaries and 10% revisions. This is a bigger mission, running five OR and providing care to around 80 patients.

Both missions last one week with 4 OR days.

There is a cost involved of $1250 Can. This cost will cover flights, accommodation, breakfasts, lunches and two dinners. This cost is given as a donation to OP Walk so it can be claimed in the taxes. This price is special for residents as the cost for all other doctors is $2500 Can.

We always bring PgY 3 -4 because we think they can have more independence and enjoy giving anesthesia in a low-technology setting.

In this link, you can find a report that a former resident, Bethany Oeming wrote in 2016. She is now part of Operation Walk Ecuador.

Guatemala is starting a Pediatric Dental General Anesthesia Mission this year. I will have more information once we finish the mission.

Transition To Practice - Round 2

Our second cohort of CBD R5s have just finished their written exam and will all soon be making the move to their final stage of training - Transition to Practice! In our program, this is a dedicated 9 blocks of training in residents' final year, beginning after the written exam, to allow residents to focus on consolidating their skills for independent practice.

We have moved to elentra! - July 2022

Our department has made the transition to using Elentra for requesting EPA observations, thus joining the rest of Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry on this platform. We are hopeful that this new platform will offer increased functionality and hopefully make the implementation of CBD that much smoother!

To find more information on how to get started with Elentra visit our Elentra page here

Dr. Herman Sehmbi and his team have been working hard on creating a new resource for our residents. He, along with help from Dr. Jonathan Brookes, have created a new set of online modules for learning the basics of regional anesthesia.

You can find the first module in the set here.

Please send any feedback about the module to cbd.western.anes@gmail.com and we will forward it along.

Thank you, Dr. Sehmbi for your hard work and dedication!

COVID-19 and CBD - May 19, 2020

Updated May 25, 2020 - Royal College guidelines added

The Schulich PGME Office has released guidelines for assessment in CBD during the COVID-19 pandemic. In essence, our guiding principle is to assess skills where possible, with the understanding that there may be a drop in EPA observation opportunities. The full impact of COVID-19 on EPA completion will be evaluated once the pandemic is over, and plans to tailor individual learning plans as necessary will be made at that time.

If you have any questions regarding CBD in Anesthesia at UWO and COVID-19, please contact Dr. Melissa Chin, UWO Anesthesia CBD Lead melissa.chin@lhsc.on.ca
