One of the great pleasures I take from serving as the district librarian is purchasing new books that will make it into the hands of our students. Many of these new books make it to our shelves because of student feedback and recommendations or requests. We are proud to say that about two-thirds of our annual library budget was spent on buying new high-quality books that reflect our students' diverse backgrounds and experiences. While fewer books were purchased for the secondary schools relative to the elementary buildings, this makes sense when considering how exposure to a wider variety of books makes sense at the younger grades. Perhaps younger students are still figuring out what types of books, topics, genres, and reading levels best fit them. By the time they are older, they have determined their "favorites," and want to stick to what they like.
