A more exploratory method that grows in and through the therapeutic relationship developed between myself and clients. We'll focus on establishing insight and self-awareness through "free association," which is simply speaking with relatively no filter about whatever comes to mind as I actively listen, asking questions, and/or refocusing as needed. I may also make interpretations utilizing my extensive knowledge of unconscious dynamics, concepts, and motives, to help us identify and understand patterns throughout time that contribute to symptoms of poor mental health and dysfunctional relationships. A great experience for learners or people who would like to know themselves on a much deeper level.
Of course. As is standard, I tailor the approach to fit client needs in either a more general sense, or in the moment. I will utilize, or weave together, things like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which is a theory that operates out of the assumption that one’s pain is a result of dysfunctional core beliefs and thinking patterns called cognitive distortions.
I also utilize knowledge of family systems (i.e. the different ways a family functions through unspoken roles assigned to members), person-centered (i.e. considering all aspects of someone such as work, family, environment, politics, etc., and how they work together), as well as existential frameworks (i.e. finding meaning in suffering, or trying to answer the question, “what is the meaning of life?”).
I may also utilize psychoeducation through providing book and/or concept recommendations, infographics, and videos. My foundational approach is psychodynamic, but all serve a purpose and work together for each unique individual. All are provided through a trauma-informed lens.
