For this project, I had to look into social media's impact and addiction on people and how it affects us emotionally, and the demographics.
After taking the "AM I ADDICTED TO SOCIAL MEDIA" QUIZ." It hit me with a reality check on just how much of my life I spend on platforms like YouTube and Discord.
My results were: "You NEED to get a grip on your social media habits! Scrolling through social media is your number one pastime - you're never off the .gram, or TikTok, or Twitter, or... (insert your favourite platform here). You spend an excessive amount of your day on social media, feeling that if something isn't recorded and posted on one of your accounts, it didn't really happen. Sleep, eating, work, and even your relationships are all suffering as a result. Did you know that, in a famous study from Denmark, adults who spent a week off social media felt much happier with their lives? They also reported increased real-world social activity and were significantly less angry and lonely than those who stayed on social media. It's time to take your social media addiction seriously and embark on a digital detox."
I complete agree
The most interesting statistic to me was how popular YouTube is compared to a platform like Facebook. I realized it's because so many people post videos on YouTube, and this generation most likely enjoys making videos. This would make sense, since the most popular online social media platform is for posting videos about stuff you like, so it makes sense that most adults would use YouTube the most.
Social Media's Impact on Society:
I feel that social media has had both positive and negative impacts on people. Since social media is more accessible and widely accepted, it enables people to easily access sources, stay up to date with the latest news, and make new connections online. Before social media, these opportunities were much more limited. However, social media also brings many negative effects. It allows fake news and misinformation to spread quickly, often in ways that look convincing even though they are made up. Because social media is easy to access, it can also lead to younger people becoming addicted or being exposed to things they should not see at such a young age. Additionally, it can lead to interactions with people who may try to harm others in real life by asking for personal information. So, while I believe social media provides benefits, it has also created serious negative effects on how people consume media.
What I’ve learned from this experience is how much society relies on social media. We, including myself, have become dependent on it to the point where we can spend entire days using it. With this info, I hope to reduce my screen time. It was surprising how detrimental it can be to people's mental health.
