Applying fifteen-year-experience of carpet cleaning to area rugs, this is basic garage-style rug cleaning prior to the construction of our conveniently located area rug dusting station. Extracting large amounts of urine from wool rugs can be difficult or impossible without a full-submersion bath. However, the polyester blend does provide extra fiber strength allowing for the application of peroxide for treating urine stains, eliminating offensive odor and brightening fibers. The ideal cleaning methodology would have been a submersion-bath but the cost could easily come to or exceed the original value of the rug. With garage-style rug cleaning, we provided the best cleaning possible that exceeded the customer need and expectation.
Although not ideal, if a rug meets specific qualifications and there is adequate space, effective rug cleaning can be performed on location at a customer's home. In this case, the rugs were examined for structural integrity prior to agitation using a floor scrubber. The red pad provided the perfect amount of agitation by scrubbing out visible spots & stains, Keep in mind that this is surface cleaning only. A thorough dusting process probably would have removed a large quantity of abrasive debris trapped between the top and bottom surface.

This large Egyptian Viscose & Wool blend proved to be a challenge due to its massive size and weight. 100% Viscose is known as a disposable rug and not intended to last long under normal foot traffic. Additionally, the fibers do not react well to moisture and become week when wet. This is why it is common to see viscose blends. When cleaning, this fiber must be dried quickly to prevent damage and the nap must be set prior to speed drying. Once dried, setting the nap is virtually impossible. In retrospect, if used in a high-traffic area, family room or dining room setting, Egyptian Viscose is a poor choice as it will be prone to permanent wear and discoloration. To be honest, I have no clue where a rug like this should be used unless frequent replacement is an option.
