The Dermatology Residency Training Program at Cardenas Medical Center (CMC) began as a section within the Department of Internal Medicine, in a modest 10 square meter room equipped with one desk and three chairs, accommodating the first three residents and consulting staff. With a mission to train skilled dermatologists and cultivate future leaders, the program began with great enthusiasm and commitment despite the challenge of securing sufficient funding for quality training. Over time, the program expanded to include a dedicated Dermatology office, conference room, and library, eventually gaining recognition as a Department and moving to the newly established Out-Patient Department. This new facility not only housed the Dermatology office but also served as the Dermatology Referral Center for Quezon City and nearby areas in Metro Manila and Luzon.
The Department now includes several specialized units such as the General Out-Patient Clinic, Contact Dermatitis Clinic, Phototherapy Unit, Dermatologic Surgery Unit, and Infectious Dermatology Unit, offering daily consultations at both the outpatient clinic and hospital wards. Determined to enhance its facilities, the Department has annually organized fundraising projects and conducted outreach programs and medical missions to serve communities throughout Metro Manila and across the country.
As an institution accredited by the Philippine Dermatological Society, the Department continually strives to advance its educational objectives and improve its service. With a clear mission towards academic excellence and exceptional patient care, the Department embraces challenges with courage and strategic foresight. Proud of its achievements, the Department attributes its success to a steadfast commitment to volunteerism.
A significant milestone for CMC’s Department of Dermatology was the official opening of The Skin Center, fulfilling a long-held vision. The Skin Center now stands as a premier facility, offering top-notch dermatological care in an environment of warmth, joy, and respect. The Department of Dermatology and The Skin Center at CMC aim to be a comprehensive, self-sufficient provider of all levels of tertiary dermatological care, staffed by a team of accredited specialists committed to accessibility for all Filipinos.
The Department of Dermatology at CMC offers an exemplary training environment, fostering research and mastery in both the science and art of Dermatology. Grateful for past achievements, the Department continues to embrace the future, envisioning and realizing even greater accomplishments.
