Discussion Post Lead - LIS 650

For this discussion post, Dr. Moniz tasked us with creating a discussion board focused around a subject related to "Diversity" from the perspective of library management and services. Here I identified library staff with varying socioeconomic backgrounds as a diverse group, opening up a conversation on ways that this is true and a space for my classmates to share any experiences as staff with varying socioeconomic backgrounds. I asked the following questions for participants to chose from and answer. 

Have you seen (or experienced) how socioeconomic background impacts employees working in libraries? If so, how? In what ways were you able to acclimate to new working environments that were drastically different from your previous roles? How can management curb low retention of LIS professionals that exist outside the typical demographics of mostly white and female? What is experience you had on your resume that you debated removing or keeping? What was the experience? Did you end up using the experience on the job after being hired? Are there other appropriate ways that management can address economic diversity?

Problems in Collection Management Assignment 2 - LIS 610

Dr. Bird asked us to read and reflect on an article of our choosing, this was the second of two assignments. I chose to read The Sustainable Library: A retrospective case study of a public library sharing initiative. Attitudes have changed surrounding sustainability, and we can see this with the development of the library of things since the pandemic in 2020. Changing attitudes have created openings for the launch of materials like Sustainability KIT's and other take home materials as starting points. In writing this paper I also reflected on, the then recent, changes in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion relating to how easy it is for public libraries to be re-defined according to changing political climate and environmental factors. 

Research Project Proposal - LIS 600

In relation to the idea that "sharing is sustainability," In LIS 600, I created a research proposal asking the question, "How can we help zines fit in?" Zines can help bring a community together, and create a platform for various voices. Zines are also difficult to catalog, keep track of, and there are some ethical/privacy concerns for artists who share their zines through the library. Most of the struggles that libraries experience with zines are the maintenance and introduction of the zines as a material. I proposed to conduct interviews with zine librarians and participants, research how zines are typically cataloged in different information organizations, and compare how different zine libraries work in different host institutions. 

Assignment 3.1 - Application Profile Development - LIS 643

Here we were meant to develop an application profile for the NC Sights and Sounds Oral History Collection located in the DigitalNC records. My partner Frankie Kennedy and I developed a list of elements and modified the data structure standards to fit the metadata needs of the collection and institution. We assessed multiple records in this collection and collected evidence of what information this format of materials require to build an effective schema. We then used what we found, to assign different data structures, making sure the materials are well represented in each record for this collection.
