In this episode, we interviewed Clyde Naranjo as a representative of Karma Kolektib, a socio-civic organization based in the University of the Philippines-Los Baños. It is composed of students who create art in the name of activism and service for the people. It often produces visual art pieces that revolve around the Philippines’ social issues, politics, and culture. Clyde also shares their opinions about the correlation between arts and the socio-economic status of the country.
Clyde Naranjo is currently sitting as the membership committee head of Karma Kolektib. They also served as its chairperson a couple years back. As a youth leader, you can expect to see Clyde appear both behind the scenes and at the forefront of mobilizations around Southern Tagalog. In their pursuit of genuine liberation and democratic rights for the people, they organize and speak for affiliating organizations of the same drive and principles such as Youth Defy Marcos and Duterte.
Apart from being a student leader, Clyde is an artist. They coordinate for Kulayan-UPLB or Kulturang Ugnayan ng Kabataan Alay sa Bayan, an alliance of artists and cultural organizations in UPLB, served as an ST Correspondent in Altermidya, and on occasion, accepts freelance writing gigs. They are currently studying as a BA Communications Arts student in UPLB.

grassroot artists - thriving artists who cut across divides of class, ethnicity, generation, gender and culture.
sponsor or commissioner - people who request an artist for a specific art piece be done for an agreed budget and commission fee.
art practitioners - people who practice art; people who are involved in the artistic process of brainstorming, creating and disseminating art.
artistic expression - the conscious use of imagination to create art pieces; the expression of thoughts, feelings and ideas through art.
cultural expression artists - creative manifestations of the cultural identities of the artist/s.
self-expression - an artist's method of expressing individualistic thoughts, feelings, emotions and ideas to achieve a purpose or goal.
collective expression - an integrated expression of thoughts feelings, emotions and ideas from different individuals who have the same purpose or goal.
artistic influence/inspiration - an artist's reason or role model for getting into the arts.
collective art-making - the integrated process of art production of different individuals who share the same purpose or goal.
art scene - encompasses all art-related components: art pieces, artists, audience, galleries, etc.
press scene - encompasses all press-related components: literature, press, readers, publishing, etc.
artistic representation - the use of art to portray or represent people, events, things, a society or ethnicity, etc.
art industry - an industry that concerns the creation, production and dissemination of art.
culture industry - the creation, production and commercialization of creative works in the form of a good or a service.
culture tenets - a behavioral guide patterned from a set of beliefs which goal is to evoke emotional response.
sensationalized artwork - art pieces that give more importance to fame and monetization than value and social relevance.
art space - a liberal space for creating, sharing and consuming art.
comics - a series of pictures with dialogues that tell a story.
cartoonist - artists who draw cartoons.
writers - people who write for expression, for a cause or for profit.
progressive theater - a kind of theater performance that cultivates the true meaning of diversity through the empowerment of the misrepresented and unheard.
small press - a publisher with small sales or a low publication count.
prop gimmick - an artistic strategy of using props to complement art pieces or as an art piece itself.
infographics - a visual image like a chart or diagram which is used to present information in a creative yet comprehensive way.
plays - a performance of a story on stage.
film festivals - a public or private event which introduces and screens movies of different genres for several days.
exhibit - a public or private display and selling of art pieces that is commonly held indoors (e.g. gallery, museum, etc.).
cultural nights - a (commonly public) days-long event that is comprised of programs and activities that reflect various cultures which the attendees can interact with.
statue - a carved or sculpted figure (e.g. man, animal, inanimate objects, etc.) made of stone, wood, marble, etc.
painting - a form of art that showcases images of various subjects; the materials and the medium used vary per artist.
Sistine Chapel - a famous chapel with a breathtaking ceiling; it is known for Renaissance frescoes which is painted by Michelangelo and commissioned by Pope Julius II.
Spoliarium - a painting by Juan Luna; it depicted the history of Rome - the gladiator matches, in particular; the painting not only exhibits a dark theme, but also an even darker message.
National Heritage Month - an annual celebration happening throughout the month of May; it celebrates and raises awareness about diverse cultures, traditions, and groups of people.
art for art's sake - creating art just for the sake of producing it - must never be the case for art because it loses its substance, meaning and social relevance.
Mao Zedong - a Chinese communist leader and founder of the People's Republic of China. He was responsible for the disastrous policies of the 'Great Leap Forward' and the 'Cultural Revolution'.

Youth Defy - a broad alliance of youth in the goal of defying the Marcos-Duterte tandem that intends to continue their families' legacy of oppressing the Filipino people.
College Editors Guild of the Philippines - an alliance of tertiary student publications and student journalists nationwide. The CEGP is the oldest and longest-running youth organization in the country, founded on July 25, 1931. It is also the only youth organization of its kind in the entire Asia-pacific.
