Through our cultural workers' eyes.
In this podcast episode entitled C.A.M.P. Creatives: The Essence of Community and Collaboration in our creative industries, we got to hear from Daphne Sandoval and Jase Manatad of Magoies Press. By highlighting the rich culture and arts of Los Baños as exhibited by its student-centeredness and collaborative nature, they emphasized the importande of community in art-making as well as the vitality of making art accessible - especially through zines and conversations. They talked about the goals and creative practices of Magpies as a collective, their experiences as well as personal motivations as culture and arts workers. They ended the podcast with advice to all aspiring culture and arts workers.

Jase Manatad
● Jase Manatad is a BS Agriculture student specializing in Animal Nutrition from
batch 2020. He is currently a member of the UPLB Perspective and MAGPIES. Jase also does graphic art (@palakael on Instagram) on the side. One of his works is "Duterte's True Legacy" which was published in the Facebook page of the UPLB Perspective.
1. Zine
“A zine is most commonly a small circulation publication of original or appropriated texts and images. More broadly, the term encompasses any self-published unique work of minority interest, usually reproduced via photocopier. Profit is not the primary intent of publication,” (University of Texas Libraries, 2023).
2. Censorship
“Censorship is the most common violation of artistic freedom. Contemporary art and artists are unduly censored due to their creative content,” (Hencz, n.d.). This refers to the suppression, hindrance, or obscuration of ideas, expressions, creative outputs, etc.
3. Exhibitors
According to Cambridge English Dictionary, an exhibitor is “someone who has made or owns something, especially a work of art, shown in an exhibition.” While that is indeed true, the term exhibitors in the art scene, as described by the speakers, is not limited to its traditional definition. Instead, its context blurs the lines and places both the role of producer and consumer upon the exhibitor.
4. Grants
Grants are sums of money awarded by nonprofits, personal and corporate philanthropies, and institutions like museums and universities to applicants to support their work. For artists, this means that grants can help you attend a residency, rent a theater, furnish supplies for a sculpture, hire audio engineers, and more. Grants can be awarded to individuals or to groups or organizations (Berman, 2020).
