Why choose English language arts?
Are you passionate about the power of words? Are you passionate about using the power of language and words to seek change in our world? ELA (English Language-arts programs) at CSU offers a variety of comprehensive and engaging curricula designed to enhance your ability to communicate, critically think, and how creatively express yourself through the power of English. Through our courses at Calvin State University, we prioritize a series of literature, writing, rhetoric, and other forms of self-expressions to explore the history and evolution of the English language, and how it came to be. We'll also explore its associations with various different complexities of language, culture, and societal issues and develop the needed skills to analyze text through annotations. Our faculty of experienced educators will guide you in honing your writing skills, while also exposing you to diverse perspectives and challenging you to think deeply about the world around you. Studying English language arts at Calvin State University will prepare you for success in any career that values strong communication skills, as well as empower you to make a positive impact on your community and the world.
The reality is that we often neglect the power associated with the English language. Through language and literacy, such as poetry, we can express ourselves through language and fails to recognize how it shapes our thoughts, beliefs, and actions. At CSU, we aim to see English as more than just a tool for communication, but rather the foundation of our world. It enables us to analyze complex ideas and emotions and express our own unique perspectives. Despite its immense power, we overlook the importance associated with English, poetry, and other forms of self-expression. You don't need to be Shakespeare to be capable of writing poems; all you need is a positive mindset and an idea that you wish to convey.

Beyond the Text
At CSU, we're training our students to better capture the essence of the text beyond. That includes making connections to real-world issues, ourselves, other forms of text that we've read, and etc. By doing so, students will not only better understand the text, but foster empathy and understanding different perspectives.
