A repurposed bus yard, the wetlands serves as a recreational area for students from a nearby high school and the surrounding neighborhoods. The park has trails, picnic areas, and observation decks to enjoy the view of the wetlands.
Part of the Tongva native land, the Ballona Wetlands has both freshwater and saltwater marshes, which are restored with native plants. The marshes are closed to the public. But, the Friends of Ballona Wetlands often tour students and volunteers along these marshes.
