The Coastal Research Institute at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) works on monitoring, protecting, and restoring the Santa Monica Bay and coastal waters. The Institute publishes its findings on coastal resource management and the status of the Santa Monica Bay in a peer reviewed journal called Urban Coast. Some of its work includes water quality projects that study the amount of nutrients and pollutants in the water, microplastic projects that analyze coastal sediment samples for microplastics, and GIS projects that produce vegetation maps of the LAX Dunes.
Santa Barbara Coastal Long Term Ecological Research (SBC LTER) is a part of the Marine Science Institute at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Its research focus is giant kelp forests in the Santa Barbara Channel, an area with high biodiversity of marine organisms. On a broader scale, SBC LTER aims to understand and predict events and processes that influence the ecology of coastal ecosystems.
The Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (SCCWRP) is an intergovernmental public agency that works to improve the management of aquatic systems in Southern California. As an aquatic sciences research institute, SCCWRP works to develop strategies, tools, and technologies that protect and improve the health of California’s coastal ecosystems. SCCWRP’s research goals aim to mobilize science into actionable recommendations that influence management and policy.

Project Goals: Monitor the local pacific harbor seal population, inform the over 30,000 annual visitors about the harbor seal rookery, and use the Federal Marine Mammal Act to help prevent disturbance to the seals and their pups
Location: Carpinteria, CA
Project Goals: Monitor the local grunion populations and document human impact - specifically in the forms of light pollution and beach grooming - on California grunion
Location: Malibu, CA
Project Goals: Monitor the resident western snowy plover population, educate beach visitors about the biology and conservation efforts to protect the plovers, and discourage disturbance or predation by crows, dogs, and other predators
Location: Santa Barbara, CA
Project Goals: Survey the number of gray whales and gray-whale calves migrating northbound as they travel through the Santa Barbara channel, teach the process of scientific research to volunteers, and provide them with the opportunity to conduct a meaningful study
Location: Goleta, CA
Project Goals: Conserve and restore the unique Elkhorn Slough coastal marsh landscape, conduct species monitoring and research to ensure the reserve's ongoing protection, and interpret the findings of this research to help educate visitors
Location: Monterey Bay, CA
