Mary “Rey” Ashford, also known as the Asset, is an assassin under the service of one Franklin Walsh. Through her handler and boss, Rey comes into conflict with the Hargreeves family. Much like them she is one of the forty-three children born on 1st October 1983.
Childhood
Rey was born to young mother, Louise, on 1st October 1989. Much like many mothers of that time, Louise was in shock and surprise when she was suddenly given a baby girl. Despite not having much, Louise tried to be the best mother she could to Rey. Often describing her daughter as her “Ray of Sunshine” giving Rey her name (even if it was with a letter change). Her early years were happy, but also a little hectic as Rey began coming into her powers. Louise was worried for her daughter, but tried her best to help support her. Her early years weren’t perfect, but they were filled with love.
It was at age eight that everything changed for Rey when Franklin came into her life. Killing her mother, Franklin stole the young Rey away.
Becoming The Asset
Franklin turned Rey into his perfect weapon. She received training, sharpening her skills and learning to utilize her powers to kill. Her ability of choice was quickly stolen, as Franklin embedded a computer chip within her head to brainwash the young girl.
From then on, Rey had no memories, no emotions - she was simply the Asset and nothing more. Under Franklin she committed horrific acts of violence and murder, to allow the man to climb up in the world. With her as his weapon, Franklin was able to gain the power and influence he wanted.
Asset VS Umbrella Academy
Franklin, much like Reginald, is driven by his scientific curiosity. However, unlike Reginald his methods are even more barbaric. Franklin has no desire to aid others, instead craving power and dominance. And that also includes adding more powers to his collection.
For that though, he needs Rey. When someone survives one of her acts of violence, the Hargreeves learn of Rey’s mysterious abilities. Through Franklin’s greed, Rey is used to fight against them. Initially the Hargreeves are hostile with her, but things soon change when they learn of her situation.
Becoming Rey Once More
Rey is finally subdued by the Hargreeves siblings. It is here that they finally find a way to remove the control chip that Franklin had embedded all those years ago.
Despite being free, the process leaves Rey chilled and shaken. She has no memories aside from the name Rey. But it doesn’t take long for the horrors of her past to catch up to her. Naturally it leaves her struggling with PTSD. Deciding to stand up with the Hargreeves, Rey decides to aid them with Franklin. In their final conflict, Rey kills Franklin both to save her new friends and for revenge.
Rey may be free, but she is very lost. The line between right and wrong is still blurred for her, but she is trying to do better. Alongside that she is trying to discover who she is.
