What is the Honor Society?
The National Speech & Debate Association’s Honor Society recognizes middle school and high school students for participation in speech and debate activities. Students earn distinction through speech and debate competition, as well as community service, public speaking, and leadership activities. Members are eligible to join the Honor Society once they have earned at least 25 points.
What is the value of the points?
Colleges look at academic programs to see how committed a student is to furthering their education. They look at sports programs to see if you've had experience being on a "team". Speech and Debate is the most prestigious of both worlds. It's a team sport that is academic. Colleges LOVE to see Speech and Debate on a college application. Having a high degree shows your commitment to the activity.
What are Degrees?
The more points you earn for participating, the higher degrees and seals you will earn for your achievements. Depending on how many points you have, you will qualify for a degree (see the chart to the right)
How do I earn points?
When you compete at a tournament, you will earn points. The better you do, the more points you earn. Generally, you can earn between 1 to 6 points per round you compete in Speech and 3 to 6 points per round in Debate. Most local tournaments are three rounds.
Graduation Honor Cords
At graduation, any member of the Speech and Debate Team may wear honor cords on their gown. Available to order from NSDA here, the cords show everyone that you were a member of a prestegious academic team.
