Science in times of turmoil

For us, it is a big pleasure to host syrian neuroscientist Talal Fael Al-Mayhani MD, PhD (currently Clinical Fellow in Neurology at Queen Square & Visiting Researcher at the University of Cambridge). Talal will talk about his research work and also about the situation of science in Syria.

Talal Al-Mayhani is a clinical fellow in neurology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), Queen Square, London, and a visiting research associate in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on neural stem cells and brain cancer, and more recently on clinical trials in stroke medicine.

In addition to his clinical and research commitments, Talal has a long standing interest in teaching, and for the past few years he has been teaching Neuroscience and Human Behaviour to undergraduate medical students in Cambridge.

Talal’s extracurricular interests include education and health systems, political theory, history and philosophy of science, cultural criticism and collecting antiques. He serves as a trustee for AlThuraya Foundation, a UK-based charity that provides scholarships for postgraduate students, and publishes opinion essays and articles in a number of newspapers and supplements, and in his blog.
