Silphium perfoliatum,
Silphium perfoliatum,
is a native flowering plant found in most parts of the eastern United States.
Mainland , NY State
She reigns here, in front of our dining room window where it's easy to get lost in the pollinator visits this time of year.
During the hottest of summer days, cupplant provides shade with it's dense growth habit and holds rainwater in "cups" formed by the leaves.
Soon, goldfinches and other small birds will feast on the seeds.
I've tried to start some further away from the house, but before those plants go to seed, the deer nibble down and these plants don't take well to a be-heading.

There's information on invasive tendencies in NY State. I can clearly see aggressive tendencies, but I hesitate to attempt eradication at this time.
Another assertive plant found in the sunnier(ish) parts of our shaded lot.

The flowers are attractive to butterflies and other pollinators and seeds are favored by songbirds.

is just getting started. New York Ironweed attracts birds and butterflies and provides some contrast to the yellow cup flowers.
