National Handwriting Day is a holiday started in 1977 by Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association. (U.S.)
This day is now celebrated in many countries as "a chance to re-explore the purity and power of handwriting."
Why January 23? It's John Hancock's birthday.
Pick up a handwriting tool and celebrate.

Handwriting is particularly important in a developing child. Our bodies develop from the center outward, culminating with our handwriting grasp (dynamic tripod grasp).
Handwriting practice helps maintain this fine motor skill, and helps develop and reinforce spelling, reading, and language acquisition.

for older folk
Handwriting is beneficial to older people too. For college and working ages, the writing implement far exceeds the keyboard where information retention is concerned.
Keyboard users argue that they can type faster than handwrite, and can type for longer durations. If hand fatigue is a factor, type during class lectures. After class, or before testing, summarize with handwritten notes.
Handwriting slows down the process of note-taking, but this allows more focus on what is being written, and better recall of the information.

No, those aren't bite marks on the pencils - at least not from my teeth. Anyone who chooses wood case pencils knows, you need a good sharpener handy. We have a few of these "SHARP Tank" manual sharpeners about.
A close up of the mechanism that holds the pencil in place leaves no doubt where the "bite" marks come from.
This pencil is not for everybody (links to reviews below).
The softest-feel #2HB pencil (we have ever used). We use them almost exclusively for everyday note-taking . Sharpen a few of them if you're writing for an extended period. I do need to sharpen these more frequently than the Mitsu-Bishi 9850 and the Mirado Black Warrior.
The norica is a smooth and dark writing tool. We use them mostly for words, but fine artists like them too.
Don't confuse the grasping reflex in infancy with the development of hand grasp. Observe the different stages of grasp development (for visuals, use link below). Control moves from the ulnar (small finger side) to the radial (thumb) side of the hand. As grasp develops, middle, ring, and small fingers may"rake" items into the palm of the hand. The pincher grasp, using thumb and index finger, follows. The developmental journey is complete with our dynamic tri-pod grasp, controlling fine finger movement so we can hold and manipulate small objects.

Our student companion notebooks and printables were originally intended for handwriting notetakers, but they are a wonderful organizing tool for all students. student notebooks / a closer look here .
