Context matters
In the woodland garden, Ageratina provides food for pollinators after other plants are no longer available. They are assertive plants, and easily established themselves in this deer-frequented, walnut-tree-shaded garden. Their success here is largely due to the fact that the deer will leave them alone.
Ageratina contains a toxic alcohol, tremadol. Smaller critters, like pollinators, are not affected. However, if your cow nibbles on too much of this plant, it can be fatal. Additionally, the toxin passes through to the cow's milk and causes illness in those who drink the milk. Tremadol can accumulate over time and cause serious illness and death.
White Snakeroot (Ageratina altissima) blooming in Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania / 4 September 2015 / Cbaile19
In our woodland garden, they peak slightly after the white wood asters. Deer are frequent visitors here and because they are uninterested in these plants, the pollinators have something to feed on late into the season. As leaves begin to fall from the trees the white puffs brighten the understory, beckoning.
I have yet to encounter Lesser Snakeroot. The links below provide photos and more identification information.

"12 to 28 inches tall. It has opposite, triangular leaves on short petioles, with crenate (wavy) to dentate (toothed) margins. The flower heads occur in clusters of 5 to 10, and have discoid flowers with white corollas about 0.2 inches long. The stems and petioles are covered with fine hairs."
