Overview of 2021 RHS Exam Schedule

The College Board developed three specific test windows and four different exam platforms in their effort to provide districts with the flexibility they will need to administer the exams within their particular circumstances and to ensure there are multiple make up opportunities for students throughout the exam period.
Please visit AP 2021 Updates - AP Central to review all College Board guidelines and the full exam schedule. For a description of each exam format, visit AP Exam Format Information.
As one example of how the schedule is organized, AP Biology can only be administered “in school, paper-pencil” in the first window, and “at home or in school, digitally” in the second or third windows. The specific options vary by course.
In order to determine the 2021 RHS AP Exam schedule, we gathered input from the teachers of each course, who also gathered input from their students. We then worked with the RHS administration to map out the schedule found later on this page. With the input from all parties we believe we have developed a testing schedule that is in the best interest of the students in each course and that we can logistically manage given our unique circumstances. The College Board has provided a tremendous amount of guidance and flexibility for students and districts in response to the ongoing public health emergency, but has ultimately left the determination of the testing schedule entirely up to districts. Specifically, each course decision was based on the following:
  • What would be the best testing platform, paper-based or digital? There are very specific elements of each testing platform that were considered by the team, and course-specific decisions were made based upon the structure of the exam and the preparation for each exam based in each course in our hybrid learning environment.
  • What are the options provided by the College Board? The options varied by course, which resulted in the need for different schedules for specific courses.
  • What is logistically manageable for us to administer in a safe, socially distanced manner? In some courses, a large number of students are registered to take the exam and space considerations had to be included in the evaluation of our ability to provide a safe testing environment for students.
Due to the complex circumstances, the schedule is also complex. To understand the structure of the exam schedule, we divided the exams into 3 categories of exams, described below, and organized into specific test windows and platforms. The exam schedule is consistent with College Board guidelines and requirements, and maximizes what teachers feel is in the best interest of their students based on their understanding of the specific exam formats and the instructional time needed to prepare their students for the exam. Category A Exams: This category includes all World Language Exams. They will be traditional full-length exams and will be administered in-school and computer based. Please note that for category A exams, world language exams, College Board will only permit them to be administered in this format. If any student is not able to come to school to take an in-person exam, the College Board is allowing for a full refund. Specific information about how to request a refund will be sent to all students registered for a World Language exam by the RHS AP Coordinators. Category B Exams: This category includes exams we are administering in-school as traditional pencil-and-paper, full-length exams. For some courses, the traditional pencil-and-paper exam is ONLY offered in administration window 1. For others, the traditional pencil-and-paper exam is offered in BOTH window 1 and window 2. In the cases where a pencil-and-paper exam is only administered in the first window, and we feel students have been best prepared for the pencil-and-paper version of the exam, administration window 1 was selected. In the cases where the pencil-and-paper exam is available in both window 1 and window 2, administration window 2 was selected. If any student would prefer to take the at-home, digital version of the exam for any reason, they can complete a form in Genesis to have their registration changed to the alternate, digital version. This form can be found in the Genesis Student/Parent Portal → Forms Library→ “AP Exam Platform/Test Window Request” form and is due no later than Friday, April 23, 2021. If you do not complete the form, you will be scheduled for the in-person paper-based exam on the date indicated on the testing calendar. Please note that the in-person, paper-based exam is the platform and window we recommend students take. Teachers will focus their instructional time and efforts in preparation for that exam platform. Category C Exams: This category includes exams that we will implement in the second window and in the at home, digital format. They are full-length exams with adaptations for the digital platform. These exams will be implemented in the second test window because teachers and their students determined that
  1. There were no material differences between the pencil-and-paper and digital versions of the exam
  2. The digital exam is consistent with the way students have been assessed in the course
  3. Two additional weeks of instructional and review team were deemed desirable given the course scope and sequence
While we are only scheduling the at home, digital version in the second test window, any students who would like to request the in-school, paper-based exam should contact the appropriate supervisor listed below no later than Friday, April 9, 2021. These requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis, but are strongly discouraged. The in-school, paper-based tests in those cases would be administered two weeks prior to the at-home digital exam.

The RHS AP Exam administration schedule reflects the testing window and platform that we believe is most aligned with the curricular, instructional, and assessment experience for each course. By requesting to take the exam in the alternate format or window, students must be aware that the teachers will be focused on preparing for the exam format and window that we have scheduled. In addition to the information above, please note the following additional items:
  • For the in-person paper-based exams (Category B), we will practice all of the COVID-19 safety protocols in place currently. This includes social distancing at test tables, barriers on test tables, sanitary practices for students and in the test site, required use of face masks and the required COVID screening form.
  • Students, or classes, who are sick or quarantined during the scheduled test administration will have the opportunity to be rescheduled for a subsequent make-up test date. The AP Coordinator will work with students should this become necessary.
  • There are some students scheduled to take two exams on the same date and at the same time. We will be reaching out directly to any of these students where we need to make a change.
