New Jersey Student Learning Standards

Terminology of the Standards Document

The standards are divided into "grade bands".  Each grade band outlines what students are expected to know and be able to do by the end of that grade band.  Districts can determine which grade level is best suited to cover each performance expectation within a grade band.

There are 3 standards in the 2020 Health and Physical Education standards:  Personal and Mental Health, Physical Wellness and Safety.

The "Performance Expectations" are the knowledge and skills students are expected to attain.  Any content included in parenthesis are examples.

There are 12 Disciplinary Concepts and Core Ideas which play an integral role in the framing by making connections among the performance expectations. They provide clear guidance as to what should be the focus of learning by the end of each grade band level (i.e., end of grades 2, 5, 8, and 12) and are listed below.

Personal Growth and Development; Pregnancy and Parenting; Emotional Health; Social and Sexual Health; Community Health Services and Support; Movement Skills and Concepts; Physical Fitness; Lifelong Fitness; Nutrition; Personal Safety; Health Conditions, Diseases and Medicines; Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs; and Dependency, Substances Disorder and Treatment)

While we are required to develop a curriculum that encompasses all of the performance expectations, we have the flexibility to select our own resources.

See below for a diagram that explains how the standards are written.
