How much does scouting cost?
Well, that depends on a lot of factors and in some cases, even how a troop is run. There are fees to join ($25), annual fees ($75 per Scout, $45 for adult volunteers, in Troop 777, we pay these when we re-charter with council each year), and activity fees (these vary widely). Registration and join fees also cover the cost of the Scout Handbook, which will be presented upon joining. There is also the cost of uniforms and supplies, but generally these are one-time costs (however, they can be based on growth). Some examples of supplies would be a tent, sleeping bag, hiking boots or hiking pack, but before you purchase anythingm check with the Troop.
As for activity fees, these can vary widely too. For instance, regular camp weekends can be as low as about $15 in Troop 777, depending on what we do for that trip. A great example of that is the trip we are taking in June 2024 to the Hiwassee-Ocoee State Park, where we will be whitewater rafting -- between food and cost of the guided rafting fees, it works out to about $50 per participant. Summer camp is generally the most expensive outing each year and they range between $350-500, depending upon where we go that year. In a typical year, we aim to conduct an outing every month. You can check out our Home page > Upcoming Events or look further down on the calendar for events we've completed in the past. Parents are encouraged to attend outings and they should expect that adult fees are generally equal to or less than the cost for the Scout.
The Troop tries to offer a variety of outings to maximize participation and work within budgets. We also conduct fundraisers throughout the year to be able to provide the Scouts with an opportunity to offset their costs. Our two largest fundraisers in the past have been our annual Smoked Pork Butt sale in November and our Pancake Breakfast at VFW Post 1291. We are always looking for other fundraising ideas too!
