In the fall of 2012 I had the opportunity to visit Japan and China for work. There was a US-Japan Joint Institute for Fusion Theory workshop in Kyōto, Japan followed by a visit to the EAST tokamak in Hefei, China with colleagues. Both were very enlightning, if very different experiences.

The above photos are from Hefei, China visiting the EAST superconducting tokamak. When I visited, the conuntry appeared to be under construction as far as the eye could see.
