Acquiring permits to the Havasupai Indian Reservation grants you access to descend from Havasupai Hilltop into Havasu Canyon and down into Supai Village, encountering Havasupai Creek and the falls. For the adventurous, you can continue along the creek to the confluence with the Colorado River and officially inside of Grand Canyon National Park. Needless to say, desert hiking in Arizona in July is not a thing to be done during the day. After driving to Havasupai Hilltop on Sat. July 20th from San Diego (apprx. 10 hrs) we slept in the car and set our alarms for a 3:00 am rise. The descent into the canyon during the night is pleasant and moderate, but we knew hiking out would be a challange. We spent Monday relaxing and doing a short, cool hike to Mooney Falls and along the creek mostly in the water, and departed early evening on Tues for a night hike out. Plenty of bugs, and a scare, when a coyote was mistaken for a mountain lion got us moving out quick.
