(1) Each quarter, students are going to complete a project on a single topic that addresses the five standards of world languages: listening, writing, speaking, cultural, and reading. The task that you complete must be pre-approved by your teacher. You must turn in a proposal sheet AND have the teacher sign the sheet in order to proceed with the task by the fourth week of the quarter. Your project will be due two weeks prior to the end of the quarter and turned in to your honors project binder.
(2) Appropriate tasks for students to complete are ones which are school appropriate as defined by the student handbook and Coronado expectations. It is therefore not appropriate to watch an R-rated movie, for example, and then write up a report about it. All tasks need to be culturally-related. For example, if you decide to complete a reading task, then you need to read an appropriate article/book IN SPANISH. Reading an article in English about a cultural event does not count.
(3) For each standard, these are the general guidelines:
a. Reading: Include a copy of what you read in Spanish with your project. Demonstrate (with notes / translations) on the reading that you have translated the words you don’t know and given it your best shot to understand the reading. Two articles about 2 pages each is usually sufficient.
b. Listening: You must cite your source (including station, channel, time, day, website etc.) for the listening activity. If it is online, print out a copy of the website and include your notes on your printout. It is better to listen to the same 5 minute clip 10 times than an hour clip once. Take notes on what it is that you understand and have learned.
c. Speaking: This activity is performed in a variety of ways. You can record your speaking portion my google voice number - (719) 445-9127. This recording is a description of what you determined in your research. A 3-5 minute recording in Spanish describing your project is sufficient. Further, it can be an oral conversation between you and Prof. Urban. You are being graded on grammar, conversation, and pronunciation. Speaking from a bullet point list is ok. Don’t read it completely.
d. Culture: This standard will usually be included in your research and practice of the other standards. However, turn in a page of notes with cultural observations (in English is if you want) of things you have learned about Latin American culture. You should then report on that information in your paper.
e. Writing: You will do your writing on the totality of what you have learned in your research in reading, listening, culture, and speaking. You will write minimally 1-2 pages IN SPANISH in my class at lunch or after school summarizing and responding to your research.
(4) All students are required to have a separate folder/binder for their project. Include your proposal sheet in the binder with your project.
(5) Each assignment will be worth 70 points. You will be graded each quarter on completeness of the task as well as following directions. Students failing to turn in a project on the assigned due date will lose 20% on their grade.
(6) This sheet must be signed and dated and included in your portfolio.
