Thanks to Tony Waters for this short 5 point trailer checklist:
- Hitch
- Safety Cable
- Electrics
- Jockey Wheel
- Brakes
But if you need a bit more detail (eg if you are hiring a trailer)
- Do you know the Trailer Specifications? (height, ATM/GVM, etc)
- Check the trailer is registered (and insured if relevant)
- Check the towing capacity of the tow vehicle, towbar and tow ball are adequate for the trailer load being towed.
- Attach trailer coupling to tow ball
- Close trailer coupling safety latch and insert locking pin
- Attach safety chains (only use appropriately rated shackles) – crossed if two chains, straight ahead if only one chain.
- Attach Trailer electrical plug to tow vehicle
- Secure the jockey wheel correctly (eg. in the upright position using bungee cord to hold wheel and handle in the upright position)
- Take the trailer brakes off and flip the locking mechanism fully over so it can't accidentally engage
- Check the reversing brake spacer/latch is in the correct position (position varies depending on load)
- Check all trailer lights are working correctly (brakes, indicators, number plate, parkers, headlights/fender lights)
- Check the tow vehicle and Trailer's tyres (pressure, tread, including spare).
- Check the load is positioned correctly and secured safely
After 20-30 minutes of driving
- stop and check that all tie-downs are secure and tight.
- place a hand over the wheel bearing covers and take note of any excessive heat coming from the bearings (if it is too hot to leave a hand on for more than a few seconds then this is an issue).
