If nothing else, I wish I’d had this advice when I started out in the outdoor industry: Get it in writing. This could be as simple as dot point email, or as complex as a formal employment contract, just get it in writing.
Some recommendations from a guy who has learned the hard way:
ALWAYS get employment contracts in writing, both as an employee or as a contractor.
ALWAYS read the fine print and get someone to explain to you if you don't understand what the document says.
ALWAYS take your time and make sure you understand what you are signing. It is illegal for someone to rush you in these decisions – that is called coercion. You are allowed to get advice on an employment contract (or anything else an employer gets you to sign!).
ALWAYS get a copy of what you sign and keep it in a safe place
ALWAYS get this BEFORE you start work!
Feel free to ask to have a friend, co-worker, mentor or even a qualified professional look over the paperwork for you.
