RSA stand for Rivest Shamir Adleman encryption

RSA is a public-key encryption algorithm widely used to secure sensitive data, particularly when it is being shared over an insecure network such as the internet.

RSA was first publicly described in the year 1977.

In RSA cryptography which is also known as asymmetric cryptography based on two mathematically linked keys - one public and one private. The Public key can be shared with anyone while the private key kept secret.

 Basically, it is based on the product of two used prime numbers to generate a semiprime number which creates a public key. In order to decrypt the message one has to determine both the prime numbers used to create the semi primes and in the case of large prime numbers, it is tedious.

 Why RSA is a widely used Cryptography Algorithm?

 First, due to difficulty in factoring large integers that are the product of two large prime numbers.

 Second, both the keys can be used to encrypt and decrypt a message. The opposite key from the one used to encrypt a message is used to decrypt it.
