Course:

Scalar Particles

Lecturers: Daniele Panizza & Yasu Sudo

This course is aimed to provide a brief overview on the interpretation of scalar particles like only, just and even and how they interact together. The first class will be devoted to the discussion of different uses of only/just, such as their scalar use (as in (1)), their exclusive use (as in (2)) and the projection properties of their (alleged) presupposition.

(1) Daniele only talks to Patrick.

(2) Daniele is only an amateur windsurfer.

In the second class we will discuss some readings arising from the interaction of even and exhaustification, such as the one in (3).

(3) Just the presence of Yasu will make me go to Bling.

Classes:

1. Exh 2.0 a new semantics for only and just

2. Minimal sufficiency readings and even
