During the first semester of English 1, I got better at reading, writing, and thinking about what I read, which made me feel more confident. I have never been a strong writer. Sometimes I struggled with organizing my essays or using strong evidence from the text. Over time, I learned how to structure my writing and use quotes and examples to support my ideas.
The area I grew the most in was my writing process. One thing I really enjoyed (and that surprised me) was writing my personal narrative. It was really hard at first, but with each revision, it was easier. Learning how to revise my work instead of just turning in a first draft really helped me improve my writing. Another area that I didn’t care for at first was the poetry unit. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the Blackout Poem. It was actually the first time I had heard about a blackout poem.
The best part of English 1 was seeing how much I improved as a reader and thinker. If I could do the semester over, I’d spend more time reviewing reading assignments ahead of class and learning more new words. For next semester, I am going to strive to turn in my assignments on time!
