Science Challenge

How can my child prepare for the Science Challenge test?

We have posted the topic lists and some of our past tests on the practice page (under the Challenge page of the menu). Please email bjhsscienceacademy@gmail.com with specific questions about what will be tested. You can also reference the past tests to get a better idea of the question types.

Are calculators allowed during the test?

No; students will not need calculators to answer test questions.

How many questions are on each test and how much time is given?

For all three grades, the test will have 30 questions and 3 tiebreakers to be answered in 30 minutes.

What are the participation fees?

For 2024, the BJHS Science Challenge will be free due to a generous sponsorship from i3 Cares.

Can notes be used during the test?

No; notes and other outside materials such as books, calculators, internet, and AI are NOT allowed during the test.

Should parents stay with their kids at Science Challenge?

Yes, parents should be with their kids at all times except during testing. During testing, parents will wait in the cafeteria after taking their student(s) to his/her testing room. All students will be led back to the cafeteria after testing.

How could my child gain entry to Science Academy through this event?

The top 15 students in 3rd and 4th grade (highest scores from testing) will receive invites into the 2023-24 program. Applications for all other 3rd and 4th graders can be found on the "Science Academy" page of this website.

How do I make an in person donation to Science Academy/Challenge?

Donations can be made in person at registration before the event.

Who are the sponsors for these events?

We are very thankful for our amazing sponsors, i3 Cares and the HudsonAlpha Institute of Biotechnology.

Should parents stay with their kids during labs?

Yes. We do not want kids getting lost in the school.

What will be offered for lunch?

The 2023 Science Challenge does not include lunch. Parents and students should eat lunch before the event starts at 1 PM.

Where can I find more information about the poster contest, cartoon contest, and rotational motion race?

The science challenge page of this website has the flyer with rules for the poster and cartoon contests. Information about rotational motion will be sent out to registrants at a later point. Any questions may be directed to bjhsscienceacademy@gmail.com.

Science Academy

How can I register my child for the Science Academy program?

Applications for all other 3rd and 4th graders can be found on the "Science Academy" page of this website. Students who scored high enough at Science Challenge will be sent separate application information.

How do I make an in person donation to Science Academy/Challenge?

Donations can be made in person. Please see Mrs. Teare. 

What are the costs of attending Science Academy?

Science academy dues are $15 to cover the cost of our materials. More information about payment will be sent out to accepted students. If you are in need of assistance, please email us at bjhsscienceacademy@gmail.com

Should parents stay with their kids during Science Academy?

No. We ask that parents drop their students off at the front office and instructors will lead them to and from their classroom. At the first lesson only, parents may drop off their students to the classroom, if they wish. 

When is Science Academy?

Science Academy occurs on Friday afternoons, twice per month. Students may begin to arrive at 3:50, but class will begin at 4:00 and end at 5:30. The program consists of about 14 lessons from August to late March or early April.
