The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.
Ideal Lesson Plan: This artifact was made during my methods course with Professor Wendt. She asked us to design our favorite lesson plan so I chose a chest and biceps workout performed in the weight room. These types of workouts are especially important for breaking down certain muscle groups and how to train them to maximize growth and strength. This lesson plan includes supersets which maximize efficiency for physical education class periods where time goes by extremely fast.
Performance indicator 2N states that the competent teacher facilitates learning experiences that make connections to other content areas and to life experiences. Performing chest workouts help to promote good posture and stretch the chest muscles to keep them from getting tight and restrictive.
After completing my student teaching internship, I realize that this lesson would only apply to the high school level as stated in my lesson plan. This lesson would have to be modified somewhat to cater to equipment and space availability as well as the number of students.
Proper Lat Pulldown Technique: This artifact features a demonstration of the proper technique needed when performing a lat pulldown exercise.
Performance indicator 2M states that the competent teacher uses a variety of explanations and multiple representations of concepts that capture key ideas to help each student develop conceptual understanding and address common misunderstandings. When I teach my lessons, I over exaggerate the movements with key phrases and terms that the students would understand and can relate to. For example, I use a rubber band analogy when explaining the reason why it is important to work out chest muscles.
When it comes to teaching these lessons, I realize that I am going to have students that aren't interested in this type of lesson and that need a review of instructions. This is where teacher self reflections are beneficial to help determine what worked and what didn't. Demonstrations and peer assessment opportunities are great ways for student learning to develop over time.
