Referral Process

What do elementary school counselors do?

Teach classroom counseling lessons
Facilitate short-term small group counseling
Provide immediate and short-term individual counseling
Work collaboratively with teachers, staff, families, and community members
Consult with parents, guardians, and teachers
Provide hygiene and holiday assistance
Provide resources and/or referrals to families for community agencies

How do students see the school counselor?

Self-Referral to see the school counselor
Parent/Guardian Referral for a student to meet with the school counselor
Administrator, Teacher, Staff Referral request for a student to meet with the school counselor
Request by a friend for a student to see the school counselor

Confidentiality

A counselor-student relationship must be built on trust and confidentiality. This means that Ms. Deason is bound by ethical codes of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) to keep conversations between herself and students private.

Confidentiality Exceptions:

Someone is hurting the student.
The student is hurting others.
The student wants to hurt herself/himself/themselves.
The student gives the counselor permission to share the information with a trusted adult.
