May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13
Abound means to have so much of something that it overflows. It is being generous. The word abound is used in the Bible and talks about how God abounds for us and how we can abound for others. God is generous to us, and we can be generous to others.
This began when God created the world and everything in it. It all belongs to Him. God's creation is overflowing with amazing things! And even when sin entered the world, God's love overflowed when He sent Jesus to rescue us!
We see this abounding or overflowing love in John 3:16.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
The story of Cain and Abel from Genesis 4 tells us about giving back to God. They were the sons of Adam and Eve. Cain grew plants and food, and Abel took care of animals. Both brothers brought a gift to God.
Abel gave God the best animal he had. He gave God his first and best, which showed God that he loved and trusted God.
Cain gave God some food that he had grown. The bible doesn't tell us a lot about Cain's gift for God, but it does say that God was not pleased with Cain's gift because God was looking at the heart of the giver.
The bible tells us that God cares about what is happening in our hearts. He doesn't want us to give just because someone tells us to. God wants us to give because we love him and trust him.
God fills us with His love and generosity so that we can share that with others. God fills our heart, and His goodness can overflow.
What does it mean to give God your first and best?
What is one way you can use what God has given you to show you love God and love others?
Pray and ask God to help you trust Him.
