WHICH requirements in the BIO majors can be fulfilled while studying abroad for a semester?

Programs that offer biology-oriented curricula (e.g., SFS, OTS, DIS, the University of the Sunshine Coast, etc.) provide an opportunity to transfer multiple courses that can count as required and elective courses within the Biology curriculum.  Some programs even allow a student to complete the 2 s.h. experiential requirement for the major and the core curriculum by conducting independent research while abroad.  In the past, some students in SFS programs have completed 2 upper-level courses in their major, an undergraduate research course in their major, and a 4th course that counted as an outside-the-major core curriculum graduation requirement.  Some students who plan well ahead may specifically delay completing specific core curriculum requirements during their first 2 years at Elon so that they have the opportunity to take courses outside their major while studying abroad that are not offered on our campus (e.g., Language, Culture and Society of Costa Rica, Public Health Issues and Challenges in West Africa, Maori Society and Culture, etc.).     

Although it does not represent a comprehensive list of all courses, the following semester courses have been reviewed and approved or are under review to satisfy requirements within the BIO major.  These courses are not offered each semester and curricula change over time so students must check in periodically to ensure the courses they seek will be offered during the semester they plan to study abroad and that they have the required pre-requisite courses to enroll in these courses. 

Exactly how courses will fit into a student’s degree audit will vary from student to student.  All students planning to participate in an affiliate or exchange program must meet with the Assistant Registrar, Robin Straka, to review their course plans.
