HOW do I start the process of studying abroad?

1.      Mention your intent to study abroad to your Biology Department faculty advisor during one of your first advising meetings when you develop your 4 year course of study in the major. You may choose the semester to be abroad so that you do not miss particular upper-level Biology electives here on campus that run on an every-other-year rotation schedule.  If you are in the Elon University Fellows Program or the Honors Program, you will have requirements in these programs that may further restrict the timing of your international study experience.

2.      Research international study program offerings by visiting the Isabella Cannon Global Education Center web site and also the web site of the international programs that interest you.

3.      Make sure the courses you plan to take are taught during the semester you choose to study abroad.  Some courses are only offered in fall or spring.  Since programs change over time, make sure you confirm your course choices the year before you plan to study abroad.

4.      Complete a Study Abroad – Elon Academic Plan.  The Isabella Cannon Global Education Center can provide a copy of the form.  The Associate Registrar Ms. Robin Straka or the Biology Department Chair can provide transfer equivalency information for courses not listed in the table above.

5.      Meet with your Biology Department faculty advisor to review the specific courses you have chosen to discuss how your choices fit within your plan to complete major and core curriculum requirements or electives.

6.      Speak with someone in the Isabella Cannon Global Education Center (ICGEC)

7.      Apply by the posted deadlines and keep your Biology Department faculty advisor informed about any changes in your plan.
