WHEN do Biology majors study abroad?

With careful planning, it is possible to complete the requirements of the Biology major in four years and engage in a semester abroad program.  Due to the prerequisite structure and verticality of the Biology major, the timing of your semester-abroad experience is all important.  Generally, the junior year is the optimal time since you have completed the foundational courses in biology and chemistry and are now free to enroll in upper-level courses of your choice.  Some biology majors choose to delay study abroad until the spring of their senior year.  Fall of the senior year is not an option since the Biology Senior Seminar course is not taught during the spring semester.  The decision of when to study abroad will depend upon the student’s individual four-year plan and the program selected.  Students are advised to begin planning a semester-abroad experience with their Biology Department faculty advisor in the spring of their freshman year.
