Are American Colleges Preparing Students for the Real World?
by
B.Rabindranauth
College is, in my opinion, supposed to prepare you for life but according to the article, "The Coddling of the American Mind," by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt, that hardly seems to be the case today. An interesting phenomenon has slowly swept across the college landscape-a movement has arisen. What is this movement? you might ask, so let me enlighten you.
It seems that students on campuses all over the United States have decided that their campus should be clean of any words, ideas, or subjects which might be considered as offensive. They have stopped looking at the world objectively and instead it’s all subjective-what they feel is what is true. This has been defined as “emotional reasoning” by David D. Burns in his book ‘Feeling Good.” Basically, what this means is that their interpretation of reality is guided by their feelings.
Professors now have to give students advanced warnings on topics which may cause them to be become emotionally distraught. They have to treat students like little children and handle them with kid’s gloves. Nothing should be said or taught which would upset them.
Then there’s the fear among faculty that students who are offended will retaliate by starting a social media war with them construed to destroy their reputations and get them disciplined or fired from their jobs. Many professors therefore, find that it is easier to stay out of unnecessary trouble, and avoid materials that might upset overly sensitive students. I think that this is a terrible tragedy, because if students are only being cocooned in a false reality, when they do enter the real world-like the workforce for example, they are going to have to face the harsh reality that the outside world does not give warnings when something ugly or inappropriate is about to happen.
I believe that students should be taught how to think critically about issues they would normally react to in an emotional way. This is the only way to help them build up their resiliency in dealing with everyday issues. Their campuses are the safest place, or should be their safe place, where they can discuss and debate issues without any fear of reprisal from their peers or anyone else.
After all, this is America, and we are all guaranteed the freedom of speech under the constitution. They should take this into consideration, and instead of taking offense at every little thing and being all sensitive, they can engage in healthy and meaningful debate where everyone feels free to express themselves.
