As part of our study and service abroad experience, we took a 1-credit hour course focused on learning about the Dominican Republic's culture and healthcare system. Throughout this course, I learned about tensions between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, how some Dominicans live, and how Dominicans are able to access healthcare (which isn't easy).
As part of an in-class assignment prior to our trip, I stated "I am most excited about the time we will spend with doctors and nurses in the Dominican Republic. I look forward to having the opportunitiy to ask them questions about how the local healthcare system works in their country. Additionally, I look forward to seeing how a clinic operates and what reasons may drive people to visit a clinic."
The following are several questions I hoped to have answered during our trip. My takeaways related to each of these questions may be found on my Reflection subpage.
What are some of the common reasons (or afflications) that cause people in the Dominican Republic to seek out medical care?
How does service to communities lacking adequate medical care work?
What efforts are currently taking place to ensure better access to healthcare for those who live in the Dominican Republic?
