The focus of my internship site is to have a better understanding of how myotonic dystrophy, a multi-systemic disorder, affects skeletal and cardiac muscle.
There are various skills I have developed which will help me complete my internship work throughout this year. Most can be attributed to several work or volunteering experiences. This includes my work as a CNA, time spent completing a research apprenticeship, shadowing at various hospitals, and volunteering at a children's hospital.

As a team member, I been given more tasks and responsibilities as the year progressed. Recently, I have worked on completing individual tasks such as: constructing an online survey, surveying patients, and collecting and recording data. Throughout the year, I have joined the team to create survey questions and to discuss a variety of tasks related to our project. Through individiual work brainstorming questions for our survey and working with a team to finalize the surveys helped us finish constructing our survey tool. As I work invidually to survey patients, we continue to get closer to having enough participants to conclude the survey. All of my efforts and tasks help move us one step closer to having a complete set of data to analyze.
By being able to collaborate and communicate with other research team members, I will be able to progress with my own research activities. I will also be able to help them come up with new ideas or solutions for their research activities. In addition, being able to stick to a set schedule will keep me accountable for my work and ensure I have the time to get it done.
The purpose of the work at my LHSI site is to broaden knowledge around the use of newer diagnostic technology to help diagnosis and plan treatments for neurological conditions. As of the result of the work, it is hoped that tools like neuromuscular ultrasound may be used to provide more insight into patient's conditions. Did you know neuromuscular ultrasound is a noninvasive method to obtain a comprehensive idea of muscle and nerve condition?
My first success in my internship came when I completed an effective literature reivew on a fairly rare condition called post-surgical inflammatory neuropathy. I met with a librarian at IUSM to build my understanding of research resources and scientific databases before pulling articles and evaluating them. Another success I am proud of is the time I spent writing an abstract for a case study. I sought the advice of my supervisor to strengthen it and formulate a final draft. As the year has progressed, my recent success has been in the form of successful patient surveys and data collection. I independently surveyed patients and successfully recorded all responses to be included upon future analysis. All of these successes will help me in my future academic and career goals. I have strengthened my literature review and writing capabilities, and I have begun to learn how to effectively approach patients and record information. These successes will help me build essential research skills for my hopeful future career as a cardiologist and researcher.
One challenge has been coordinating schedules. To improve this situation, I have coordinated with my supervisor to create a class schedule that might coordinate with our research schedule better. Another challenge has been setting up and learning how to use some of our data entry and general research tools. I have been and will continue to utilize guides and ask my supervisor for help as needed when I work with these tools.
A recent challenge arose some patients did not fit into the survey cohorts we created. The team discussed the issue and then created an additional cohort to address this challenge. This helped me understand the process a researcher would walk through during an issue in the middle of a project.
Barriers and Facilitators to Obtaining Advanced Care Planning for Patients Living with Parkinson’s Disease
At my internship site, we aim to determine why patients living with Parkinson’s Disease may or may not have advance care planning documentation present in their electronic medical records. We are currently conducting a patient survey, and we strive to provide solutions to any barriers we find that may hinder a patient’s ability to provide their advance care documents. Throughout the year, I have completed literature reviews on advance care planning, worked with a team to brainstorm and modify questions for a patient questionnaire, constructed the Redcap for one of our determined patient cohorts, and walked through the questionnaire with several patients. The earlier phases of my internship work involved significant learning about Parkinson’s Disease and its progression. I also learned how to pull relevant information from research sources as I gathered information about the significance of advance care planning documentation. As the teamwork phase of our project began, I worked with a team consisting of interns to PhD candidates as we discussed the patient cohorts we would create and tailored questions we planned to ask them. The finalized questionnaires are currently being used to collect survey data at the IU Health Parkinson Clinic from patients attending appointments, and we hope to have preliminary findings analyzed by May 2025.
