A licensed practical nurse needs to have a high school diploma or equivalent to be accepted into one of the Massachusetts programs. These programs can take anywhere from nine to 18 months to complete. Most employers will pay for this program, giving you time to study and on-the-job training while completing the course.
The average pay for an entry level LPN job is $29/hour with top earners making over $50/hour. With an LPN and some job experience there are lots of opportunities to move up without going back to school for a four-year degree. LPNs can become unit or department managers, case management workers, as well as other management positions, depending on the facility.
Some duties of a LPN include but are not limited to:
Taking and monitoring patient vital signs
Assisting patients with eating, dressing, and bathing
Administering medication
Communicating changes in patient behavior or health status to nurses, physicians, and family members
Maintaining accurate patient records
Collecting specimen samples when needed
Taking an active part in patient care planning
Overseeing Certified Nursing Assistants and training
Preparing patients for transfers or discharge
Assisting in medical procedures
Managing emergency medical situations
The practical nursing program is a 10-month program, consisting of three terms with classes starting in January and graduation taking place in November. Classes are held at the Berkshire Medical Center North Campus, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Some clinical rotations may be held in the evenings or on weekends.

To becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant, you need to pass a four- to 12-week training course that most nursing homes and hospitals will pay for and provide. All you will need is a high school diploma or equivalent to qualify for the program.
CNAs can work in skilled nursing facilities, hospitals, assisted living, home healthcare, and many other medical offices. Typical duties are turning or moving patients, helping them bathe, checking vital signs, transporting patients, taking care of wounds, and many other duties that can change based on facility. The average starting pay for a CNA fresh out of the program is $20/hour with top earners making over $27/hour.
Oftentimes, once working as a CNA in a facility they offer to pay for you to get your LPN or sometimes other licenses or degrees in the field.
