To become a carpenter you will at least need to have a high school diploma or a GED. To further your education, you can go to a trade school and/or do an apprenticeship. You will need to have a driver's license, unless you can find a different means of transportation.
Trade schools can offer degrees, diplomas, and carpentry certificates. Typical classes last two years and can include basic carpentry theory and advanced carpentry skills. While in these trade schools, you will spend a fair amount of time with hands-on training to become familiar with and perfect their skills with scaffolding, job site safety, and how to use electrical tools. Although most degrees are one to two years, some students can earn a certificate in 12 months.
Apprenticeships can be sponsored by organizations and other carpentry unions. If you do not attend a trade school, you will need to have six months of hands-on experience. A typical apprenticeship lasts four years, although you could finish sooner if you work full time. In the event you do work full time, you would receive a salary and medical benefits. Some states allow a 17-year-old to apply if they submit a parent or guardian consent form. It is also important to have good health and be proficient in English. The Carpenter’s Training Institute is a great resource for apprenticeships for recent high school and trade school graduates.
