My WPI Education

Overview

At the time of my practicum, I was a junior (class of 2023) Biology and Biotechnology, and Psychology Double Major at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. At WPI I have been exposed to a wide array of biology and pedagogy classes that I have been able to implement in my teaching. Double majoring in psychology in addition to biology has also given me further understanding of student development and has given me skills to ensure that content is taught as well as incorporating appropriate social-emotional learning.

Biology Course Work

At WPI I have taken a range of biology classes that have given me a working knowledge of many different types of biology. Through having exposure to cellular, human, and environmental biology I have gained knowledge and experience that I can share with my students.

I have taken multiple lab courses that have taught me research skills and given me hands on experiences. I am able to take these lab experiences and use them to help be develop my own lab and projects. In addition to this, I am able to share these experiences with my class and pull their interest towards the lesson because they enjoyed hearing about real applications.

Teaching Course Work

In the Teacher Prep Program, I have taken multiple pedagogy related courses that have given me tools to be successful in this practicum. These courses have given me information in multiple areas of education including, how students learn, how to structure a classroom, and how a child's mind develops.

School Psychology

This course gave me an understanding of child and adolescent development and how it is related to their needs in an academic setting. This course covered topics in school readiness, transitions, behavioral skills, sociocultural diversity, skill gaps, interactions between teachers and children, and assessment tools. This class created a basis of information for me to grow from and develop appropriate classroom structures that worked for me and my students

Developmental Psychology

The course walked through human development from conception to death, analyzing patterns and their significance. There were a wide array topics covered such as biological, cognitive, emotional, social, and moral development. This course provided me with the knowledge I need to understand what my students are going through from a developmental perspective, allowing me to better support them.

Teaching Methods in Math and Science

This course centered around assessing different strategies for creating an effective STEM classroom. We learned about different learning styles, how to develop an engaging lesson, and how to structure a course. My section of this class was taught during a time when COVID required that classes were online. Due to this, I was unable to observe in person classrooms, and instead we analyzed videos of teaching.
