So You Want to Become a Registered Behavior Technician?
Starting down the career path toward becoming a Registered Behavior Technician is an exciting adventure! Registered Behavior Technicians work 1:1 with children diagnosed with autism in home, school and community-based settings providing direct therapeutic treatment using the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. All Registered Behavior Technician services are delivered under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) Clinical Supervisor.
Essential Registered Behavior Technician Duties Include:
Providing structured one-on-one instruction to individuals diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Communicating BCI’s philosophy of positive behavioral practice, compassion and respect.
Promoting the development of functional communication skills (i.e. speaking and using assistive communication devices) in accordance with the client’s ABA treatment plan.
Providing instruction on social skills (i.e. social interactions, play behavior, and conversational skills) in accordance with the client’s ABA treatment plan.
Supporting independence with adaptive living skills (daily routines) in accordance with the client’s ABA treatment plan.
Collecting clinical data as instructed by your BCBA Supervisor.
Writing daily clinical notes to keep team members informed about progress on goals as well as any barriers to progress.
Attending regular clinical team meetings facilitated by the BCBA Supervisor to review clinical progress, treatment plan modifications and feedback generated through supervision sessions.
Completion of mandatory training requirements as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, run, sit, stand, and drive. The employee is also required to use their hands and reach with their arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Employees are required to engage in frequent vocalization to effectively carry out verbal behavior training for clients requiring vocal communication training, as well as provide vocal instructions for clients who have listener discrimination programs, verbal reinforcement procedures, and other vocal instructions targeted in their treatment plans. Discerning a client's vocal behavior is essential to one’s ability to carry out specific ABA treatment protocols. Full auditory functioning is required to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this job.
The employee may be required to intervene in physically demanding behavioral interventions with physically aggressive clients.

Complete CPR or BLS certification within 30 days of employment
Ability to obtain RBT credential through BACB within required timeframe
Minimum of High School diploma or GED equivalent is required for entrance into the RBT Internship program
Successful completion of high school education is required and college coursework in a related field is preferred.
Proof of educational attainment in the form of college degree, college transcripts, high school diploma or GED equivalent required for registration for the RBT exam with the Behavior Analysis Certification Board
Professional experience working with children and preference given toward experience with individuals with special needs and challenging behavior.
Ability to utilize least restrictive measures in avoiding escalated situations.
Ability to use verbal interventions that involve use of empathy, compassion, positive behavioral programming, respect, openness, client-centered approach, as well as those best practice interventions outlined in least restrictive verbal intervention protocol.
Ability to utilize positive reinforcement to shape behavior
Ability to analyze and distinguish between individual versus systemic issues
Ability to engage in active listening
Ability to calm critical situations involving a child
Ability to use applied behavior analysis principles
Ability to produce data and daily notes on specific cases, as well as specific interventions provided during the course of work. Ability to write in English and produce written material with appropriate grammar.
Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions from your direct supervisor (BCBA/BCaBA) and caregivers when appropriate.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, pictorial, or schedule form. Ability to demonstrate good judgement and efficiency during decision-making.
Ability to work collaboratively with others.
Ability to prioritise tasks and demonstrate efficient use of time.
Ability to portray a professional, polished appearance and manner. Knowledgeable in the practice of positive behavioural programming.
Ability to operate tablet technology and navigate online practice management software.
Completion of 40-hour Training in Applied Behavior Analysis
Attend all 4 phases of Skills Clinics
Complete assignments and skills tests for your Initial Competency Assessment
Completion of Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers course resulting in BLS Certification
Completion of Registered Behavior Technician Certification
Completion of credentialing as an RBT under BCI’s health insurance contracts
Am I guaranteed employment at the end of my internship?
While you are not guaranteed employment at the end of the internship, you have completed a training that makes you highly marketable. You are able to take your 40-hour certificate to another organization and finish your RBT credentialing process with that company if you are not offered employment with BCI.
