For this assignment I created a PowerPoint presentation around employee mental health and how it impacted my employer at the time. An ongoing and important topic to me is mental health. In several instances of my academic career when I’m given the freedom to select a topic, it would revolve around mental health. I chose this topic because I had spent 11 years at this company and watched it turn from a great employee focused company to a struggling Board focused company. This PowerPoint proposal had a target audience of this company’s senior staff. Because of my audience, I had to consider what information is best to present. It made the most sense to provide them details in terms of cost to the company.
In this presentation, I broke down how the company benefits had continually slashed mental health benefits year over year and presented data and research showing how poor employee mental health cost the company over $2 million a year. Being based in Utah, my research from the state health website able to show Utah has a history of higher rates of depression disorders in adults compared to the rest of the US to bolster my argument for the need of mental health benefits. Additionally. in 2019, HR sent out a survey to determine the company eNPS (Employee Net Promotor Score). Employees were asked one simple question: “On a scale of 1-10, would you refer a friend or family member to work here?” On the eNPS scale of -100 to 100, the company scored a -19. According to the eNPS scale, that’s considered between “low” and “okay” as an employer. This eNPS score was used as additional evidence that the company needed to start seeking solutions. To address this issue, proposed solutions were provided to the senior staff that would help the employees who needed mental health benefits without completely reinstating the original benefits the company was keen on reducing.
I utilized graphics from the web, imported graphs based on public data made in excel, and referenced scientific studies in my proposal. While I never got a chance to give my company’s senior staff this presentation, I did give a slimmed down version to the Benefits Specialist in HR. Unfortunately, it was not well received and ended up being a heavy factor in my decision to seek employment at a different company.
